The Environmental Working Group tested thousands of sunscreens for safety (check out their amazing cosmetic database, "Skin Deep"), and found this to be one of the safest on the market. That's why I tried it.
Like many mineral sunscreens, it does leave a whitish hue(from the zinc oxide) on your skin that is most apparent after you've been in the water. Admittedly not very pretty if you're on the beach to look good...but for kids, this is the best. (And great for adults who don't want to spread carcinagenic ingredients all over themselves, either.)
It has a fresh herbal scent from an essential oil blend that I think helps keep away black flies and mosquitoes.
If you want unscented or want something cheaper, also consider Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen for Super Sensitive skin. It's a very similar product.

California baby SPF 30+ sunscreen lotion is perfect for the beach, hiking and swimming at the lake. Our PABA free, non-chemical formula helps to soothe bug bites and hydrate parched summer skin. California baby's active ingredient is a highly micronized titanium dioxide that scatters and reflects dangerous UV rays, offering even UVA-UVB broad-spectrum protection. Beautifully scented with non-toxic essential oils like citronella, lemongrass and cedar; these pure and natural oils are traditionally recommended safe, gentle, and effective and do not cause harm to humans, pets or the environment.Very water-resistant, non-staining formula.
