First impressions: Nice smell and consistency. It absorbs into my face nicely and after a week of use, my skin feels supple and looks good. Not any different than how it looked before I used Alba, but I've experienced no irritation or unwanted breakouts.
The Good: SPF 15 and lots of ingredients that contain antioxidants derived from from ocean plants: extracts of spirulina maxima (algae), ulva lactuca (sea lettuce), laminaria digitata (kelp), chondrus crispus (irish moss) and macrocystis pyrifera (kelp), citrus grandis (grapefruit) fruit and camellia sinensis (green tea). Algae is frequently used in cellulite creams for its firming abilities. The amino acids in the other sea herbs act as conditioners. Most of the other ingredients are fairly tame. Purified water, certified organic aloe barbadensis leaf juice, stearic acid (a potential irritant), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, vegetable glycerin, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter).
The Bad: This is where Alba falls down a bit. The last two ingredients are the preservatives phenoxyethanol and ethyhexylglycerin. We wrote about an FDA warning that included phenoxyethanol in 2008. At its least offensive, it's an irritant. But at higher concentrations it has the potential to cause reproductive damage and other problems. It is in a lot of products, and shows up towards the bottom of this Alba moisturizer so there isn't much in there, but there's some. Ethylhexylglycerin is often used instead of parabens (which is nice), but is another potential irritant, albeit with fewer potential side effects than phenoxyethanol.

Alba Kids Sunblock SPF 45, 4-Ounce Tubes (Pack of 2) Review

(More customer reviews)I chose this product because we have a 7 month old baby & a 10 year old with fair skin. we are generally outside on the weekends and we love the beach. After reading an article published by the Environmental Working Group on sunscreen toxicity, I decided to go with a more natural product. Alba Botanica Kids SPF 45 gets a 5 on their scale which puts it smack in the middle. This rating seems based primarily on their assessment that the UVA/UVB protection. The EWG found that this product provides quite a bit more UVB protection than UVA. That said, it has all vegetarian ingredients, the bulk of which are deemed safe by the EWG, and Alba does not test on animals. It is also free of parabens.
On first application there is a pleasant cucumber scent, and the texture of the lotion is very generous - a little goes a long way. To my relief it does not leave the skin feeling tacky or sticky. It seems to absorb quickly, and after it is applied there's a familiar sunscreen scent.
So far we have found it to be droolproof, and quite sweat proof. It did not irritate our baby's skin or eyes, since he rubs his eyes when he's tired, I've been particularly wary of eye irritation.
If you are in and out of the water, it will need to be reapplied a couple of times during the day, but for regular outdoor activities it holds up very well on the entire family. And hey, it's the official sunscreen of the New York Mets!
Overall a solid product that does what it claims and seems a good value.

(More customer reviews)After reading studies last summer that indicated that many standard, chemical based sunscreens actually accelerate cancerous tumor growth, I started a search for a mineral based sunscreen that would be effective and somewhat affordable. After much research, I settled on the mineral sunscreens from Alba botanicals.
My kids spent last summer with my wife in the Colorado Mountains where the sun can be incredibly harsh and they used this sunscreen every day. We noticed that:
-This stuff is thick and hard to rub in.
-It is greasy
-Nobody got sunburned, even with prolonged sun exposure but we sure did get TAN!
All in all, this isn't as easy to use as traditional sunblock or spray-on, but if it works better to the extent that studies suggest I am a very happy customer.
