Colorescience - Sunforgettable SPF 30 Mini Orb Review

Colorescience - Sunforgettable SPF 30 Mini Orb
Average Reviews:

I purchased the min orb to see if I liked using this style of powdered sunscreen better than the brush. It is OK, and nice to keep with me for touch ups when I'm out in the sun longer than I thought. However it is messy and it WILL stain clothing. I recommend getting the Perfectly Clear. Almost Clear is anything but -- it is actually the color of a medium beige makeup only it doesn't blend as well as a mineral makeup foundation. Also, you MUST get complete coverage -- or you will get burned in streaks!

UNwrinkle instant spf 30 powder.
This is the first powder that did what it said and I did not have to wash off immediately because it accentuated my fine lines instead of blending them. The ingredients are great, the spf is great and the powder is great...it does exactly what it says it will do.

Banana Boat Baby Sunblock Spray Lotion, SPF 50, 8-Ounce Spray Bottles (Pack of 2) Review

Banana Boat Baby Sunblock Spray Lotion, SPF 50, 8-Ounce Spray Bottles (Pack of 2)

Since our son was born, we've been using Coppertone Water Babies sunscreen, but didn't like that it stung if it got into his eyes. When we found this, we were thrilled. I even put it on my hands and rubbed it into my eyes to make sure it was truly "tear free". In that respect, it's great. However, we've used it twice on our son. The first time (last weekend), he got a little bit red, but today, after being in the sun for only two hours, he's got the worst sunburn ever. I'm devastated since I'm very careful about his sun exposure (we're both fair-skinned). In the year and a half of using Water Babies, he NEVER had a sunburn. I also used this sunscreen today and I am sporting the worst burn of my life as well...it looks as though we went without any sunblock at all. I hope someone can learn from our bad experience.

This is a nice product, but the packaging is poorly designed. There is no way to place the cap back on the brush bristles without damaging them. Other brands have a small sleave that pushes up on the brush before you put the cap on. This product does not. PTR needs to rething this packaging.

Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush Refill 0.45 oz. Review

Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush Refill 0.45 oz.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is excellent!!!! I have very sensitive skin and most sunscreens turn my entire face red when I use them (I am allergic to anything that has any type of glycol or salicylate in it). This product does not turn my skin red in any way. It does not rub off at all like most other powders do.
I bought the All Clear color in a full size and there is a lot of powder in the tube. I am not that crazy about the brush that comes in this package because bristles keep breaking off and staying on my face (they are hard to remove), but they distribute the powder sufficiently. When using the brush, make sure the sliding brush protector snaps when you push it down in order to have the brush distribute the powder (you will see what I am talking about when looking at the product). The case is very portable and can easily be carried in a purse for touch ups.
However, I have a light medium skin tone and the All Clear casts a slightly pale sheen to my skin (which would be fine for my much lighter winter skin color since I live in So Cal and use sunscreen in the winter, but not for my summer skin color). If you are medium- or darker-skinned, you are better off trying the Perfectly Clear (medium skin tone) or the Almost Clear (darker skin tones) as they have some color to them and won't look so drastic compared to the All Clear alone on your skin. If you have paler skin, the All Clear should work just fine. If you are considering this product, I would recommend buying a sample of the three main colors (All Clear, Perfectly Clear, and Almost Clear) and trying them out to see which color(s) match your skin (it should look natural on you).
Fortunately, I bought the samples of Perfectly Clear and Almost Clear to try out in case the All Clear was too light for me, while the All Clear looks okay if I work a little to blend it in, I found that Perfectly Clear was a great color for my summer skin tone.
One other thing, remember that it is SPF 30, so if you are going to use this product and spend a significant amount of time in the sun, don't forget to reapply the product often (like you would for an SPF 30 lotion) because the protection will break down faster with more sun exposure.
Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone considering using it. Even though it is very expensive, it is worth it and is a more viable option for me to use sunscreen without having my face turn red. I will be buying this product again.

GOscreen Natural BrushOn Powder Sunscreen for Kids and Adults, SPF30 Review

GOscreen Natural BrushOn Powder Sunscreen for Kids and Adults, SPF30

When my dermatologist suggested that I start using a powder sunscreen (which provides a physical block instead of a chemical block), I was hesitant because I did not think it would stay on my face and truly protect against the sun. I took a leap of faith that it would work and fell in love with powder sunscreens.
I was thrilled to find Go!screen (which is 1/2 the price AND better quality than the original powder block that I had bought). The all natural sunscreen powder is both economical and comes with an applicator that works well -- it is also re-fillable, making it eco-friendly too (good for our family and the environment). This is the first sunscreen that my kids don't mind using...with a quick brush across their faces, they are good to go. I also love it for me...the non-greasy powder is particularly great when I am playing tennis and sweating in boot camp. Two thumbs up for Go!screen!

Hawaiian Tropic Baby Faces & Tender Places Sunblock Spray SPF 50 (Pack of 4) Review

Hawaiian Tropic Baby Faces and Tender Places Sunblock Spray SPF 50 (Pack of 4)
Average Reviews:

I use this for myself as my "everyday" sunblock on my arms and face. Its not greasy and sinks into my skin without making me feel like I'm wearing a ton of sunblock. I find the pump bottle very convenient for application and like the light powdery fragrance. I recently started using a prescription strength Retinol cream on my face and wanted to make sure this sunscreen was sufficient. My dermatologist said it was great and make sure I use it everyday (which I sure do).
I think I've tried just about every sunscreen out there including all the "dry touch" ones and none of them sink in as nicely as this one. The only drawback is that I can't seem to find it in any local stores but ordering from Amazon is very convenient anyway.

Burt's Bees Sunscreen, SPF 30 Review

Burt's Bees Sunscreen, SPF 30
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the past few years, my husband has been unable to be in the sun even for a few minutes without setting off an allergic reaction on his neck (or possibly PMLE*) and triggering his rosacea. This would cause severe itching for around a week.
We go to the beach every summer and he loves to be out, but now can't leave the house anymore on weekends during the day. He's tried every conceivable branded product for sensitive skin plus "natural" sunscreens, including those with titanium. Most of these are so full of chemicals, it's no surprise that none helped and many of them made things worse.
As noted, Burt's Bees sunscreen does have a yellowish cast due to the titanium, but the SPF 30 works perfectly and for the first time either prevents an allergic reaction to sun exposure (and sunburn) --or perhaps does not cause one. My husband is now able to be outdoors again during the day for the first time in years.
PS: For women who have skin sensitivities, photoallergies, PMLE or rosacea and who object to the yellowish cast, Natural F/X foundation was designed to cover up rosacea and a touch of that mixed in to the Burt's Bees sunscreen can offset the yellow. It has a titanium sunscreen, too.
* According to Intellihealth, "Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), which usually appears as an itchy rash on sun-exposed skin, is the second most common sun-related skin problem seen by doctors, after common sunburn. It occurs in an estimated 10% to 15% of the U.S. population, affecting people of all races and ethnic backgrounds."

This 100% natural, non-whitening formula provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and helps keep skin hydrated without using chemical sunscreen actives like octinoxate and oxybenzone. Instead, titanium dioxide, a naturally-occurring mineral creates a micro-fine barrier on your skin to reflect the sun's harmful rays.

This has no bad chems (just like Calif Baby), but it's about half the price of C.B.! The difference is the SPF. C.B. is SPF30, and Avalon Organics is SPF18. My daughter (18 mos) has fair skin & light brown/hazel eyes, and this works great for her! Nothing even close to a burn! We even used it in FL when she was 12 mos. It's also nice that it looks white as you put it on... I can tell if I've missed a spot. It eventually soaks in to the skin a little more. Only downside is that it leaves white marks on everything (the stroller, the diaper bag, etc.) But those wipe off easily enough.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30+, Baby, 3-Ounce Tube Review

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30+, Baby, 3-Ounce Tube
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was recommended by the nurse practitioner at the pediatricians, she says they have never had a problem with it. That is the first positive. The first obvious negative is that it is hard to come by. We ordered some from Amazon -- but somehow missed the baby variety (we will be glad to try the other ourselves). But in looking at the Blue Lizard website we discovered that a local grocery store carries it.
Note that the manufacturer lists it as SPF 30+. Their website explains that they registered it in Australia where the requirements are tougher and the ratings only go up to 30 (vs. US ratings that go to 65 or more). However, the inorganic pigments they use (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) work differently than the traditional organic (in the chemical sense, not the whole earth sense) UV absorbers used in most US based sunscreen. When molecules absorb UV light, they change the electronic state of the molecule and these excited molecules tend to decompose; thus, the organic UV absorbers are sacrificial. As long as they are there in their initial form, they absorb light but as they decompose they cease to absorb. Sunscreen that works this way will drop in absorbance from the start and this is why some people say that SPF tells you how long it will last, not how much it will absorb (i.e., it will absorb virtually everything at first and the decay gets to any given level sooner/later). Pigments work by a combination of scattering and absorption. Since the absorption occurs in a crystalline matrix it tends to lead to less decomposition. The pigments in this could be stable in UV light for years so the useful life of a pigment based product is limited by how long it stays on before being washed off. The manufacturer claims Australia has tougher tests for this too. Bottom line: this SPF 30+ should outlast many higher SPF products.
POSITIVES:
Doctor recommended
Inorganic pigment vs. organic UV absorbers
Bottle that changes color in UV to alert you (sounded hokie until it turned purple in the parking lot on a very cloud day).
NEGATIVES:
Hard to find (apparently the manufacturer is out of capacity and shipments are back ordered)
Expensive
CAVEATS:
Many other sunscreens use pigments. Blue Lizard did not invent pigment technology, they have formulated a product and are marketing it. My positive rating is based on recommendations from the nurse practitioner at our pediatrician's office who says the product Blue Lizard has formulated has produced fewer side effects than other products.
I also think that pigment technology is better than the small molecule (I am trying to find a neutral word rather than "organic" or "chemical") approach. But there are those who feel otherwise. The pigments themselves probably are safe to eat - -McDonalds is supposed to have used TiO2 as a thickener in their shakes (not to be confused with milk shakes). I don't know if they still do (I heard they went back to actual milk shakes), but those would have been larger particles as well (i.e., to make the shake white vs. transparent). Both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide come in food and pharmaceutical grades and you consume them in a lot of products that just happen to be white. But pigments come in many grades (e.g., titanium dioxide comes in two crystal structures with and without dopants, with or without encapsulants and in a wide range of sizes). There is much discussion in the cosmetic users groups about how this is safe because it is micronized not a nano particle: this should be viewed as market positioning. I do not know the exact grade used here, I suspect it is roughly 40 nm average particle size. When government funding agencies wanted to push nano technology, that would have qualified as nano on a grant application. Now when people have concerns that nano particles are unsafe, it is being called micronized. The big concern with nanoparticles is as a dust (e.g., OSHA has declared sand to be a respiratory carcinogen -- so better not use this at the beach). This is not a powder, the particles are contained in a coating. If you are afraid of nano particles, you can go back to small molecule based product like benzophenone that pose risks as well. Wikipedia has a good article on the sun screen controversy. There are those who believe sunscreen does not prevent cancer as well (of course, if you felt that way, you would probably not be reading this review). Like I said, my personal belief is that pigment based technology is probably better than small molecules (and sunscreen is safer than UV exposure). But I am still wary of putting this on our daughter's hands which she puts in her mouth. The bottle says not to be taken internally and I do believe warning labels.
