Total Block Clear SPF 65 - 2 oz Review

Total Block Clear SPF 65 - 2 oz

I have melasma, and need a sunscreen to provide strong UVA / UVB protection. I have used Total Block for 7 years, and it has prevented this condition from worsening, despite my spending a reasonable amount of time in the sun.
The clear does *not* dry completely clear, and can be a bit chalky. My skin is very fair, so even adding all the "light" pigment to the customizable tinted formulation does not result in a light enough color. By blending the tinted and "clear" products so that they match my skin tone, I can get a decent foundation.
I would recommend this product for anyone who is serious about complete sun protection and is patient with applying a product that can be a bit chalky.

SPF is not an accurate determination of a sunscreen\'s capability of protection from the sun\'s harmful rays. It is only an indication of protection from one wavelength of light, UVB. It does not indicate protection from UVA rays, which are responsible for deeper damaging, including tanning, wrinkles, and pigmentation changes. Currently, there is no rating system for UVA protection.UVA radiation, unlike UVB, is consistently the same all day long, and all year long. UVA rays present the same damaging effects to the skin in December as they do in July. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB, and are believed by many physicians to be more harmful, which is why patients with sun sensitivy require daily, year round complete protection.Total Block 65 has been specifically formulated for individuals who require full spectrum protection from the sun\'s damaging effects. Total Block contains a complete cellular and photoprotective system.Directions: Shake well before using. Apply to exposed areas. Reapply every 2-3 hours.

I read the product ingredients on the Amazon description and was excited to find a sunscreen product with so few ingredients. I was horrified when it arrived and I read the list of "Inactive Ingredients" the first three in the list: Alumina, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Stearate all Aluminum derivatives, all of which I avoid using , Aluminum can interfere with magnesium in the body and aluminum is also linked to Alzheimer's. I'll never buy this again and won't use the one I did buy. I am very annoyed to have paid a total of $12.79 for a product I won't use.
Here is the full list of "Inactive ingredients" on the product box:
Inactive Ingredients: Alumina, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Stearate, Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cetearyl Isononanoat, Cetyl PEG/PPG-15/15 Butyl Ether Dimethicone, Citric Acid, Dipropylene Glycol Dicaprylate-Caprate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Flavor, Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Wax, Hexyldecanol, Hexyldecyl Laurate, Iron, ozokerite, zingiber officinale (ginger) root oil, flavor

I'm not sure what Neutrogena added to this product but it heats my skin when I apply it and I started to get a rash. The old version of this product worked fine (and I wouldn't say I have particularly sensitive skin). It's a shame but I'm going to have to throw it away.

Total Block Face COTZ SPF 40 (1.5 oz) Review

Total Block Face COTZ SPF 40 (1.5 oz)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this product because my dermatologist saw a sunspot on my face. She told me I needed to use this sunblock everyday under makeup and that it was, along with a prescription she gave me, the best product for anti-aging. What I really like about it is how smoothly it goes on and how smooth it makes my facial skin feel. It goes on as easily as a makeup with an oil base. I would apply it on my hands, but since it's a bit pricey, I want to use it sparingly. This particular sunblock cannot be found in stores but there are several merchants that sell it on-line. It's just a matter of who offers the best price. I plan on continuing to use it since my dermatologist recommended it and I like the way it feels. I have sat out in the sun with this sunblock on and it has been very effective.

Fallene Total Block Cotz Waterproof Sunblock, SPF 58 - 2 oz Review

Fallene Total Block Cotz Waterproof Sunblock, SPF 58 - 2 oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My dermatologist recommended this product after I had a chemical peel (to remove all of the previous sun damage to my fair, freckled face!) It is wonderful! All other products I've used still allowed me to freckle, even while preventing burns. COTZ prevents both the burn and the freckling. Moreover it doesn't sting when it gets in my eyes, and it doesn't burn my cheeks when I put it on. I love the slight tint and opacity, which even out my skin tone better than my expensive foundation without looking like make-up. As if all of this weren't enough, when I reapply COTZ while I'm on-the-go, I don't have to rush to wash my hands, because after a few minutes the "lotion" feeling is completely gone from my palms.
This product is definitely worth the price. I'm hooked!

I just returned from a 14 day cruise where I spent hours out in the sun without getting burned. Before I left town, I picked up a bottle of Murad Waterproof Sunblock-SPF30. This sunscreen is the best I have ever tried. It offers maximum protection with a once a day application. This product smells great probably due to the pomegranate antioxidants. It also controls the shine that some other sunscreens often leave behind. It even offers protection against wrinkles! This sunscreen was the first in not causing my skin to breakout with blemishes.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock with Helioplex, 3 Ounce Review

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock with Helioplex, 3 Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the recent discovery's about how extremely damaging the sun's rays are, and by the urging of that speech floating around the internet, I decided to look for a sunscreen.
You need to look for a sunscreen that will protect you from both UVB and UVA rays. Most sunscreens already protect you from UVB, 93% of the rays with SPF15 and 97% with SPF30. However, not many sunscreens protect you from the spectrum of UVA rays, the more damaging rays. UVB rays will cause damage to your skin, so we need protection from this to prevent sunburn. UVA rays are much more dangerous, since they penetrate and cause connective tissue damage, aka aging. While most sunscreens take care of a small section of the UVA spectrum, you need to find a sunscreen that filters almost all of the harmful rays, like the protection that we already have from UVB. To do this, a sunscreen needs to have certain chemicals in it, namely avobenzone, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or Mexoryl SX. Mexoryl SX is the most effective of these, but since it has just been approved by the FDA, is is too expensive in the US, costing $35 per 3.5 oz. Neutrogena is the best choice after that, since it contains avobenzone, the next best chemical, and helioplex, which increases the length of time that the avobenzone remains effective in the sun from 2 hours to a reported 5 hours by resisting the chemical breakdown of avobenzone in contact with the sun's radiation. I would recommend this product for people with normal skin who do not want to spend $10 an oz. If you have sensitive skin, or are looking for sunscreen for your children, then you should go for one of the other two chemicals zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. For most people, the best choice is this sunscreen.

Fallene Total Block UVA/UVB Complete Full Spectrum Sun Protection, 2 fl Ounces (59 ml) Review

Fallene Total Block UVA/UVB Complete Full Spectrum Sun Protection, 2 fl Ounces (59 ml)
Average Reviews:

I live in California and have very fair skin (blond hair, blue eyes). Most sunblocks I have tried have not worked as promised, even those recommended by my dermatologist (I've tried MD Forte, Solaray, Solbar, and many others - from the cheap stuff to the expensive brands). I have found in the past that even when I apply 30-60 SFP sunscreens during the day, I still get some color in my cheeks - the issue with year-round sunny climates is that even when you are going about your day, driving and shopping and so forth, you are exposed to damaging sun. In addition, I have an indulgence -- I love to bicycle at the beach during the daytime on occasion. Nothing worked until I tried Fallene. It is not a miracle product...I'm sure that if I was in the sun 8 solid hours and applied this product every 2 hours, I would still get a tiny amount of color. However, the WATERPROOF Fallene product works like a charm for the 2-hour bicycle rides - seriously, I get NO color, and the regular SPF 68 product works beautifully for all-day year-round protection. It is the first time I have ever been satisfied with a sunscreen. I like that it is thick, because a little goes a long way. I also can prone to break out, and I have had no problems with this product. Very high quality. If you're fair-skinned, this is the only thing that will work. Be sure to shop around on the internet, as you can get good discounts on it.

Fallene Total Block Clear SPF 65 is a highly effective sunscreen product formulated with photo-protective and cellular-protective agents that are beneficial to the skin. Total Block is unique in its ability to protect skin from the full light spectrum and prevent cellular environmental damage to the skin, regardless of the source of the pollutants. Incorporating eight forms of mill-dispersed solids -- ranging in controlled particle size from 10 microns down to a few nanometers -- Total Block achieves maximum protection throughout the entire UVB and UVA range. These particles are homogeneously suspended and work to shield the skin from atmospheric damage and trauma. Micronized and sub-micronized particles of titanium dioxide, sub-micronized zinc oxide, and ultra-micronized iron oxide form the foundation of this powerful, effective sunscreen.
The Full-Spectrum Sun Protection Fallene, Ltd. produces the most complete full spectrum sun protection available. Total Block Clear SPF 65, Cotz SPF 58, Lipcotz SPF 45, and Total Block Tinted SPF 60, all combine multiple particle sizes of micronized titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide to form a complete barrier from the light spectrum, including UVA/UVB.
The Total Block Clear SPF 65, as well as the other Fallene products, are specially designed for photo-sensitive individuals, but are perfect for anyone concerned about maintaining healthy skin and promoting the integrity of their immune system.
The Dangers of UVB Wavelengths SPF rating does not adequately measure protection from all the damaging radiation effects of light. SPF is only a determination of protection from one specific wavelength of ultraviolet radiation, the UVB (290nm - 320nm). Unfortunately, there is no currently approved standard to rate the quality of a sunscreen's UVA protective capabilities. UVA (320nm - 400nm) is the deeper penetrating wavelength that is more often associated with skin changes, such as wrinkling, pigmentation, and long term damage. The SPF rating system does not accurately or completely define a sunscreen's protective capabilities from harmful ultraviolet radiation, except the UVB wavelength.
UVB creates a red, painful irritation first experienced during early sun exposure, but UVB is not the only ultraviolet wavelength damaging to the skin. In fact, UVB has only a minimal effect upon the deeper depth of skin. UVB and UVA radiation are both recognized as causing skin cancer, and SPF 30 protection is just not enough.
Direct Physical Photoblockers Benefits Most of the physical photoblockers are naturally occurring metal compounds (iron, chromium, zinc, titanium, etc), although some, such as bismuth, are man-made. In addition to their photo-protective attributes, these substances also assist in preventing windburns and skin damage from wind-driven micro-particles, such as dirt and grime. These physical blockers also offer a substantial defense against infrared rays in two ways.
First, particles that are large enough to be seen, i.e. the reflect visible light, will also reflect and refract infrared waves that are the most harmful to the skin (760nm - 1,800nm). Second, regardless of particle size, these metal-based materials act as a "heat sink" and thereby reduce the heat effect on the skin.
Titanium Dioxide: Absorbs Light and Protects Skin This white-pigment powder is widely used in cosmetics. Products containing large-particle titanium have a greater opacity, which means they have greater lightening or whitening qualities. Opaque titanium dioxide is highly reflective and strongly scatters all UV and visible rays. It also reflects much of the skin-damaging infrared waves, keeping skin cooler and reducing "heat" damage that causes unwanted photo-aging.
To photo-stabilize titanium dioxide it must be micro-coated with a protectant, such as silicone or aluminum oxide. Since titanium dioxide spreads poorly on the skin, another way to inhibit its breakdown is to incorporate titanium dioxide with other blockers. To achieve cosmetic elegance and usefulness, microcoating the titanium dioxide assures a good, even application to the skin. A downside of large-particle titanium dioxide products is that they produce a white, opaque appearance on the skin when applied. However, submicronizing the titanium dioxide powder, as Fallene does, creates small particles that absorb visible light and protect the skin, but they're still invisible on the skin, so you're not covered in embarrassing white salve.
Transparent (sub-micronized) titanium dioxide works by absorbing, reflecting and scattering UVB and some UVA rays. However, protection against UV, visible and infrared is significantly limited when submicronized titanium dioxide is the primary protectant.
Zinc Oxide: Extends Photo-Protection Zinc Oxide has been known and used topically for centuries as a skin protectant and wound-healing adjuvant and is also recognized as a mild antimicrobial agent. More than 50 years ago, zinc oxide was indicated as a block for ultraviolet light (UVB/UVA). It also reflects infrared from the skin, as does titanium dioxide. However, its ability to protect in the long UVA range (300nn - 400nm) is much higher than titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide absorbs, rather than scatters, most UVA, while titanium dioxide primarily scatters these wavelengths. Thus, formulated in combination with titanium dioxide, ultra-fine zinc oxide "closes the window" in the UVA range. Zinc oxide works to both complement titanium dioxide's protection and extend photo-protection to the skin where titanium dioxide is insufficient. The optimal particle size range for ultraviolet blocking zinc oxide (without blocking visible wavelengths) is approximately 80 to 150 nanometers (1,000 nanometers = 1 micron).
Iron Oxides: Adds Color and Complements Primary UV Blocking Agents Iron oxide is used in a wide array of cosmetics to provide cover-up color. Cosmetic iron oxides are manufactured to a high purity, desired color and particle size.
Iron oxide pigments for cosmetic use are micronized powders. They are available in a number of shades and tones of red, yellow, black and brown. These cosmetic pigments, if incorporated at adequate concentration and properly dispersed, not only add color, but they also provide significant skin protection from multiple wavelengths of light.
Ultra-submicronized iron oxides protect against visible light waves, but also add a little color to the finished product. This allows for the addition of higher levels of infrared protecting iron oxides, while retaining the cosmetic elegance and shade of the final preparation. Submicronized iron oxides block ultraviolet rays, which is a great complement to the primary UV blocking agents.

We bought this product and used it on our two kids, 18 mos and 3 1/2 years. Both of them have various though different allergies and mild allergic reactions and thankfully those of the older one seem to be resolving. Both of them responded to this product with eczema: the older and more allergic one at the end of the day had eczema on his face, legs and shoulders where the lotion had been applied. The younger, less allergic one, had eczema on the back of his legs on about the night of the second day of use. He had had almost no eczema prior to the use of this product.

The box says this sunscreen dries clear, but it's tinted and the tint rubs off on clothing. (It does wash out in the laundry, but it gets all over clothing). The suncreen never "dried" and was always sticky. I was in Hawaii and the humidity and heat were not that bad and so I was expecting it to be drier on my skin.
It did protect me very well and was extremely water resistant... and soap resistant... and washcloth resistant. In fact the only way it came off was to get a nylon scrubby and scrub.
I have PMLE (an extreme photosensistivity), and my dermatologist recommened this brand. The lotion did prevent a major out break and was extremely water resistant. So for that, it' gets three stars. However, I found that if I was not going out on a boat or doing hours of water acitivities that the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin (SPF 30 and with 9% Zinc) was just as effective and did not stain. It washed off more easily (but still needed scrubbing).
Becuase this was so effective, I'll try the Clear next time. I did not get the Clear for this trip as it wasn't available on next day shipping in order for me to get this before I left on my trip.

Fallene Cotz SPF 58 is a mineral-based sunscreen that utilizes ultra-micronized titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and iron oxide for effective protection from the sun's harmful rays. Cotz is dye-, oil-, PABA- and fragrance-free, offering full-spectrum protection without any "chemical sunscreen" ingredients. This product is ideal for light-sensitive and pediatric uses, but it is also an excellent sunscreen choice for just about anyone with sensitive skin. In addition, this sunscreen offers significant water-resistant properties, which makes it an ideal choice for active people and outdoor activities. Cotz SPF 58 will leave your skin soft, smooth, and, most importantly, protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
The Full-Spectrum Sun Protection Fallene, Ltd. produces the most complete full spectrum sun protection available. Cotz SPF 58, Lipcotz SPF 45, Clear SPF 65, and Tinted SPF 60, all combine multiple particle sizes of micronized titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide to form a complete barrier from the light spectrum, including UVA/UVB.
